An open network for communication

Chat freely.
Connect with everyone.

You've reached a Matrix server. Matrix is an open network for messaging that lets people communicate across different servers and apps.

What is Matrix?

Think of Matrix as a network for communication, rather than one particular app.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Chat with people

Send messages, share photos and files, create group conversations, and make voice or video calls.

๐ŸŒ

A network, not a company

Matrix is an open standard. Different servers can communicate with each other, much like email.

๐Ÿ”

Privacy-friendly

Matrix supports end-to-end encrypted conversations, giving you more control over your communication.

You don't need to understand Matrix to use it.

Most people simply use an app. One of the most popular choices is Element.

Open Element in your browser, create an account, and start chatting. You can also use Element on your phone or computer.

You don't have to run a server yourself. Just like email, you can use an account provided by someone else.

What about WhatsApp?

Matrix can connect to other messaging services through something called a bridge.

Bridges connect different messaging services.

A bridge can allow messages between Matrix and another service, so you can use Matrix as a place to communicate with people who use other platforms.

WhatsApp Signal Discord Telegram IRC Slack and more
Bridges are optional and aren't automatically part of every Matrix server. They are usually set up by the server owner or provided by a separate service. If you use a third-party bridge, its operator may be able to access the messages that pass through it. For sensitive conversations, it's worth checking who operates the bridge and how it handles your data.

Getting started is easy.

You don't need to be technical to use Matrix.

Looking for a bridge?

Bridges aren't something every server provides. If you want to connect Matrix with another service, you can look for a hosted bridge service, ask someone experienced with Matrix to set one up, or run your own bridge if you have the technical knowledge to do so.

Keep in mind that a bridge is a connection between different systems. Depending on how it works, the bridge operator may be able to read messages passing through it.
